What is a Credit Score?
It is a three-digit Number ranging anywhere from 300 to 850. In short the higher the Number the better your Score. With this Number Banks, Lenders, Landlords and Employers will determine if they feel confident approving your Applications for Loans, Credit Cards, Apartments, Cell Phone Contracts, Jobs and so on.

Is it all yours?
Identity Theft is still a big Problem and Credit Monitoring is important. On the positive side there are some great Companies out there who can and will help you fix and also monitor your Credit.
When reading your Credit Report, first make sure that everything on your Report is indeed yours.
For example, if you know for sure that you have only 1 Credit Card, but your Report shows that there are 2 Credit Cards that would be a red Flag and needs immediate attention.
The same is for anything else that you know for sure is not yours (Bills, Loans, Cellphone Contracts and so on). Those Items need to be removed from your Credit Profile as soon as possible because those are most likely fraudulent.
As always you have options and you need to decide what Option is best for your Situation. If you have a lot of time and patience you can contact the three Credit Bureaus yourself and have it removed or you can use the help of Credit Repair Help Companies like The Credit Pros, Lexington Law or CreditRepair.com. If you want to do it yourself we have more Details here.
Fixing what’s yours!
Now let’s look at the Items on your Report that are indeed yours.
Generally speaking if you have an Item on your Credit Report that you have not paid for 7 YEARS, that item can and should be removed from your Report. The Debt from that certain Item will be erased without you having to pay it off. To have it removed you can get help from The Credit Pros, Lexington Law or CreditRepair.com. or you can contact the Credit Bureaus yourself.
Almost everything “negative” on your Credit Report is eligible for Removal after 7 Years. Following is a true Story but the Name has been changed:
“Frank received a Bill from the hospital (because getting sick is not cheap) and his Insurance only covered part of the Bill. Frank was not able to pay the Bill and therefore after a few months his Bill was send to Collections.
The harassing phone calls and letters from the Collection company started.
Fast forward (6 Years): Frank hasn’t paid that particular Bill for 6 Years. He just ignored the letters and phone calls and even after 6 Years he was still getting harassed with Phone Calls and Letters from that Collection Company.
Frank only had 1 more year left until he was able to remove that bad Debt from his Credit Report but he didn’t know that. He also did not know that as soon as it is removed the phone calls and letters will stop and the Debt will be gone. Frank was not aware that he can indeed remove the bad Debt from his Credit Report without paying it off.
Frank received another Letter from the Collection Company and due to his frustration, he took a Penny and taped the Penny to the Letter. He took the Letter and decided to send it back to the Collection Company with a little Note on the Letter that said, “This is all I have”.
What Frank did not know is that by doing the he just reset the 6 years.
Now he must wait 7 years again until he is eligible to remove this bad Debt Item from his Credit Report (unless he can pay it off, then he would be able to remove it sooner).
The Reason he just reset the 6 years is because by sending the Letter with the Penny he made a payment towards that Bill. It seems really silly but no matter how small the payment is, if you send money to a Collection Company they will count it towards your outstanding Bill.”
With this in mind, be really careful what you do no matter how frustrating it can be at times. If you have a similar Situation and you know that you are not able to pay that Bill, just wait until the 7 Years are up and have it removed. Otherwise you will reset the time again every time you send a new Payment. You can get Credit Repair help from The Credit Pros, Lexington Law or CreditRepair.com. They will help you get it removed or you can also do it yourself by contacting the Credit Bureaus once you are passed the 7-year mark. Always keep track of the Dates so you know when it is time to contact the Credit Bureaus.
Newer unpaid Bills (Recent Debt)
To fix your Score faster it is always best to pay off your Debt rather than waiting Years. Did you know that everything is negotiable? Have you noticed that the Letters from the Collection Company offer you Payment Options and Debt forgiveness? For Example: You have a Cell Phone Bill and your Debt is $500. The Collection company is sending you Letters with an Offer that you only have to pay just $400 and the rest of the Bill is Debt forgiveness. But you only have $300 though.
What you can do is contact the Collection Company and negotiate the payment down to $300. It is not guaranteed but worth a try. Just make sure that you get everything in writing! Because you will need proof to have the Debt removed from your Report. It is a three-step process:
For help you can also contact: The Credit Pros, Lexington Law, American Debt Enders or CreditRepair.com.
Paying on time
We know it is easier said then done, because life happens! But whenever you receive a Bill, try to pay it a few days before the payment is due. This will give you a strong positive Credit Report and Lender will see that you are Credit worthy because you do pay your Bills on time.
Once your Credit is repaired
Building and improving your Credit Score is fairly easy with Credit Cards but not only to improve your Credit Score but also to make money with Credit Cards. Of course you have to know “How to use Credit Cards correctly“. In order to do that you need to choose the correct Credit Cards.
